Know Your Nose: 4 Rhinoplasty Myths Debunked
The nose is an essential part of our face and overall appearance. It is, then, no wonder that rhinoplasty—also known as nose reshaping, and more commonly, a nose job—continues to be a popular procedure. In 2014 alone, well over 217,000 people underwent rhinoplasty surgery. In spite of its popularity, rumors are prevalent. Not knowing what to believe, many are reluctant to something that can have truly wonderful benefits.
Here, we hope to debunk some of the myths surrounding rhinoplasty.
Myth #1: Rhinoplasty Results are ObviousOne of the biggest concern’s our patients express is their fear of not looking like themselves afterwards. Rhinoplasty is about achieving an aesthetically pleasing nose that is harmonious with your overall appearance. As a masterful surgeon, Dr. Bharti’s skill and distinctive eye enable him to tailor your surgery to your appearance. During your consultation, your “goals and expectations need to be clear”. Taking those into consideration Dr. Bharti will “examine you and determine if those goals and expectations can be met”. Dr. Bharti strives to provide you with the natural and subtle results you want.
FYI: Rhinoplasty only affects the nose—all other facial muscles are left untouched.
Myth #2: Rhinoplasty is PainfulTo make your surgery as painless as possible, your rhinoplasty surgery will be performed under general or local anesthesia combined with sedation. As with any surgical procedure, there will be some lingering discomfort that generally lasts between 7 to 10 days. Although the resulting bruising, swelling, and redness around the eyes may look painful, many find that it looks far more traumatic than it feels. Most patients find that rather than sore, their nose feels tender. To help with any pain or discomfort, Dr. Bharti will prescribe you an oral pain medication.
FYI: As a cast or splint will cover your nose, you may notice that your feel ‘stuffy’, almost if you have a cold—this should only last a few days.
Myth #3: With Rhinoplasty, there is a Long DowntimeMany fear a long recovery. You are able to return to your daily routine after only 10 to 14 days. Vigorous exercise or any sport that elevates the risk of injury to your nose should be entered upon with extreme caution. Dr. Bharti advises “you wait 2 to 4 weeks to avoid swelling or possible injury to the nose”.
FYI: Some also believe that post-rhinoplasty, the nose will be permanently fragile. Although you will want to be careful at first, your nose will not be more sensitive or vulnerable in the future.
Myth #4: I Want That NoseYour nose is as unique to you as your face. Dr. Bharti says it best: “I am very cautious with patients who want their nose to look like someone else's especially a celebrity. The main reason is that I prefer aesthetic procedures that refine patients and avoid an operated on appearance”. Using your facial features as a guide—and not the nose of someone else—allows Dr. Bharti to create a look that is just as beautiful and unique as you are.
FYI: Being stuck on having someone else’s nose is simply inviting disaster.
Hopefully we have shed some new light—the best way to debunk any rhinoplasty myth is trust your new nose to a well trained and experienced plastic surgeon. Board certified, Dr. Bharti will guide you smoothly through the rhinoplasty process.
